What’s new in Gynecomastia Treatment?

One of the newest cosmetic surgery trends is more men seeking improvement in their chest’s look through Gynecomastia treatment. Years ago, men thought that the best treatment for male breasts was to lose weight. Now, more men are discovering that cosmetic surgery provides the sculpted, masculine chest they desire.

Gynecomastia surgery with Dr. Azouz is a day surgery and involves an enhanced recovery protocol meaning most patients describe recovery as pain-free.  Local blocks, specialized medications, and fluids are used to minimize pain.  Dr. Azouz also performs male breast reduction via a drainless procedure, with camouflaged scars and a minimally invasive technique.  This avoids the large scars that can be an obvious sign that cosmetic surgery has been performed.

Gynecomastia Surgery l Dallas l Dr. Azouz

Dr. Azouz has also created customized liposuction cannulas used specifically in gynecomastia surgery.  These cannulas allow for the removal of both glandular and fatty tissue with high-definition body sculpting techniques.   Dr. Azouz can also directly excise the gland or “breast bud” via a small camouflaged incision.   Dr. Azouz explains that removing the gland is imperative to gynecomastia surgery and is often impossible with liposuction alone.

What are the current trends for Gynecomastia surgery in Dallas?

According to The Aesthetic Society, liposuction is the most common cosmetic surgical procedure in men, with breast reduction treatment of gynecomastia as the second most common. More and more men are also choosing to combine their cosmetic surgeries.  The most common combinations are:

– Daddy do-over with male breast reduction combined with liposuction of the abdomen

– Daddy do over with male breast reduction combined with tummy tuck

– Male breast reduction combined with eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty)

– Male breast reduction combined with nose surgery (rhinoplasty)

These national trends are in keeping with the trends Dr. Azouz has seen in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex.

Is there a “right age” to have gynecomastia surgery?

There is no right age to address male breasts.  Dr. Azouz performs the surgery in preteens, teenagers and even in men who are in their sixties and seventies.  Most men who are older to report wishing that they had done it sooner.

How does gynecomastia surgery deal with loose skin after removal of the male breast?

Dr. Azouz uses specialized liposuction techniques including tumescent liposuction, power-assisted liposuction, and safe liposuction among other techniques to tighten the skin after gynecomastia surgery.  Some patients with gynecomastia and loose skin will require skin tightening procedures or breast lifts at a different time.  Dr. Azouz discusses the chance of needing a skin tightening operation in the consultations.

Why are men flying to Dallas for male breast reduction?

Dallas has become a hub for Gynecomastia treatment.  More and more men are electing to fly into Dallas from all over the United States because of cutting-edge and novel techniques offered by board-certified plastic surgeons Dr. David and Dr. Solomon Azouz.  Both plastic surgeons have extensive experience in male plastic surgery and are Board Certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS).

Combination Plastic Surgery: Face, Breast, and Body

What cosmetic procedures can be combined and why would that be beneficial?

Combining plastic surgery procedures is extremely popular and involves a plastic surgeon performing multiple plastic or cosmetic surgeries in one day.  This is a great option for patients who have many different concerns they would like to address. Dr. David Azouz is a board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon in Dallas, TX who performs many combination procedures to help his patients reach their goals in a safe, efficient, and effective manner. Dr. Azouz is highly experienced and offers patients the benefits of a natural-appearing look with minimal scarring from his combination procedures. The most well-known combination procedure is the mommy makeover, but there are many procedures that can be combined. Facelifts, tummy tucks, liposuction, and breast surgeries are all popular surgeries that can be done together.

Benefits of Combination Plastic Surgeries

There are many different benefits that come from performing two or more surgeries simultaneously. Mainly, it cuts down on the need for multiple surgery days which allows a patient one recovery. Additionally, combining procedures often cuts down on the cost of surgery and anesthesia.

Candidates for Combination Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery

The best candidates for combination surgery:

  • Require moderate improvement of the areas to be treated
  • Are in good overall health
  • Are non-smokers
  • Have realistic expectations

Dr. Azouz recommends that patients with areas that require significant skin and soft tissue resection stage their procedures rather than have them done on the same day.  The right combination of procedures can achieve the results a patient desires and this is best achieved through expressing your goals with Dr. Azouz.  Dr. Azouz is committed to performing plastic and cosmetic surgery as safely and efficiently as possible.

Combining Plastic Surgery with other non-plastic surgery procedures

Patients often desire to combine cosmetic and plastic surgery operations with other types of surgery including:

  • Hysterectomy
  • Removal of gallbladder
  • Functional rhinoplasty
  • Hernia repair

Dr. Azouz is able to coordinate performing cosmetic surgery with other noncosmetic surgeries with a variety of different surgeons.  Often Dr. Azouz will work with an OBGYN to perform a hysterectomy and tummy tuck together.  Hernia repairs are often performed at the same time as a panniculectomy (tummy tuck).

Recovery Time

One of the main questions Dr. Azouz is asked during his consultations with patients is how much recovery time they will need for their procedure. If a patient has multiple concerns and requires multiple procedures, this adds to time spent recovering from surgery. With a combination procedure, you get one recovery time.  A mommy makeover may involve a drain-less abdominoplasty or mini-tummy tuck, liposuction, and breast augmentation in the same day.   Men often desire liposuction of the abdomen to be done concurrently with liposuction and removal of gynecomastia of the chest.  The recovery time for each procedure is about four to six weeks until a patient can return to heavy exercise. Instead of having to heal for four to six weeks to or three different times, patients can get surgeries done on the same day so that they only go through one recovery.

How soon can you have cosmetic surgery after massive weight loss surgery (gastric bypass)?

Gastric bypass induces weight loss by both restrictive and absorptive methods.   This means that a patient will eat less food and less food will be absorbed through the patient’s digestive tract.  Patients will generally have their weight fluctuate for six months after surgery.  Dr. Azouz typically recommends having a stable weight for six months prior to surgery as well.  Patients who have had bariatric surgery (gastric sleeve or bypass) are typically excellent candidates for post-bariatric body contouring.  Combination procedures are often possible and include a variety of cosmetic surgeries of the body, breast, and face.

Possible combination surgery after bariatric procedures include:

Mommy makeover

Body lift with liposuction

Tummy tuck with liposuction

Facelift with eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty)

Breast lift with breast augmentation

Liposuction and removal of gynecomastia

Cost and Recovery

Along with the cut down on recovery time, combination procedures also cut down the cost. The cost of each individual procedure varies greatly. You have to add in the surgical facility, anesthesia, and medical devices to the total cost. By getting multiple procedures done in one surgery, this cuts down on the time spent in the operating room and anesthesia costs being repeated. Dr. Azouz will give you an estimated cost of your unique combination procedure during your in-person consultation.

Popular Combination Plastic Surgeries

To help his patients save on recovery time and cost, Dr. Azouz performs many of his procedures in combination with others. Due to the drain-less technique accompanying his procedures, patients can enjoy a less complex healing period. One of his most popular procedures is the Drainless abdominoplasty. Other popular combination procedures are:

  • Mommy Makeover (breast and abdomen)
  • Liposuction and Removal of gynecomastia
  • Liposuction and Abdominoplasty
  • Breast Lift and Reduction
  • Rhinoplasty and Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty)
  • Facelift and Eyelid surgery
  • Mini Abdominoplasty and liposuction

Dallas Plastic Surgeon Dr. David Azouz discusses Tummy Tucks: Frequently Asked Questions, Definition, Surgery Recovery, Cost and More!

What is a Tummy Tuck?

A Tummy Tuck is also known as abdominoplasty and is a procedure performed by a plastic surgeon to remove excess skin, fat, and repair weakened muscles in the abdomen to create a slimmer profile. This is a very popular procedure for women who have undergone childbirth to help bring them back to their pre-baby bodies.

Patients who have diastasis recti, where the muscles in the abdomen are spread apart, can benefit from this surgery.  Men and women with hernias are also candidates for repair via a Tummy Tuck approach. Patients with significant weight loss can benefit in their workouts, with intimacy, and with their general comfort by removing the excess skin.

What is diastasis recti?

A diastasis of the rectus abdominus muscles refers to the laxity or weakening of the major muscles in the abdomen.  These muscles separate and cause a protuberant or “bulging” abdomen. Some patients feel that their abdomen ”looks pregnant” because of the weakening of their rectus diastasis.

Does Dr. Azouz do a lot of Tummy Tucks?

YES! The Tummy Tuck is one of the most popular procedures performed by Dr. Azouz. Patients who are looking for a Tummy Tuck procedure usually have many questions about the procedure. Dr. Azouz takes ample time during the consultation appointment to answer all of the questions that his patients have.   Dr. Azouz combines his drain-less Tummy Tucks with liposuctions and an ultra-low incision line. Patients can often conceal their incisions in even the most skimpy undergarments or bikinis after their Tummy Tuck because of the low incision. Dr. Azouz also performs mons liposuction which is critical to avoiding a bulge after a Tummy Tuck.

Can I have a monsplasty at the same time as my Tummy Tuck?

Yes! Dr. Azouz routinely performs monsplasty/liposuction in men and women during a Tummy Tuck.

Which Tummy Tuck Procedure is Right for Me?

There are a few different modalities of the Tummy Tuck surgery. These are the full abdominoplasty, mini-abdominoplasty, and no-drain abdominoplasty. Different modalities will work for different patients based on their specific needs.

Full Abdominoplasty

The full Tummy Tuck involves a horizontal incision below the lower abdomen and an incision around the navel. This procedure removes excess skin while also repairing the muscles and pulling them to a tighter position. This is commonly used for patients who have issues from pregnancy or major weight fluctuations such as patients who have had Bariatric Surgery (Post Bariatric).

Mini Abdominoplasty

With the mini Tummy Tuck, only one incision smaller incision along the lower abdomen is needed. It pulls the skin to a tighter position. It is best used for minor cases of laxity. The best candidates for this procedure have most of their laxity below the navel.

No-Drain Abdominoplasty

Dr.  David Azouz has been performing no drain Tummy Tucks for over 25 years. This technique is to reduce the amount of fluid that is built-up after surgery, by closing off the space where fluid would accumulate.  No drain (drainless) surgery avoids painful drains, avoids excess scarring and does not require the frequent monitoring and emptying of fluid.

During the consultation appointment, Dr. Azouz will examine your abdominal skin and muscle laxity, go over your medical history, and learn about your goals and concerns to recommend the best method of Tummy Tuck for you.

Frequently Asked Tummy Tuck Questions

What is the Tummy Tuck Recovery Like?

Recovery is different for each patient. Dr. Azouz will provide specific aftercare instructions that should be followed closely for optimal healing.   Dr. Azouz utilizes multiple techniques that minimize pain with a Tummy Tuck. This includes the method of anesthesia, local nerve blocks, no drain approach, cold therapy, and more.  Swelling and bruising is normal but should subside within weeks after surgery. Dr. Azouz has patients avoid steam rooms and saunas for three months after surgery so as to swell. Most people are free to return to their normal routine within one to two weeks.   Heavy activity such as scuba diving, horseback riding, basketball, hockey, as well as heavy lifting is out for six weeks.

Can a Tummy Tuck Be Combined with Other Procedures?

The Tummy Tuck is often combined with other surgeries for a more comprehensive approach to addressing patient concerns. Dr. Azouz routinely uses liposuction with a Tummy Tuck to remove fatty tissue in and around the abdomen. Also, a Tummy Tuck is one of the main procedures done in a mommy makeover. A mommy makeover is a comprehensive surgery that uses procedures that address the abdomen, breasts, and fatty tissue on the body.  Patients will often have a breast lift, breast augmentation or labiaplasty concurrently with their Tummy Tuck.

Do I need to lose weight before a Tummy Tuck?

Often Dr. Azouz does not necessarily recommend losing weight prior to a Tummy Tuck.  A Tummy Tuck can be a great way to improve exercise and diet. Dr. Azouz does recommend quitting smoking prior to a Tummy Tuck.

Does Dr. Azouz perform liposuction with a Tummy Tuck?

Dr. Azouz routinely performs liposuction in multiple locations during a Tummy Tuck.  Liposuction helps to sculpt the body and provide an improved figure. Dr. Azouz also performs liposuction of the lateral chest wall to remove “bra fat” with a mommy makeover.

Can my belly button be saved with a Tummy Tuck?

Dr. Azouz is able to create a more aesthetic umbilicus (belly button) during a Tummy Tuck.  Dr. Azouz saves the belly button skin and “moves” the belly button to a more aesthetic location with better position.  Dr. Azouz has been able to save many belly buttons that other surgeons had deemed not salvageable.

Yes. Dr. Azouz is able to coordinate with OBGYN (gynecologists) and general surgeons to perform intrabdominal surgery concurrently with various cosmetic plastic surgery operations.  This includes liposuction, breast augmentation, breast lift, Tummy Tuck and monsplasty at the same time as another surgery. This allows for one anesthetic and one recovery.

Is a Tummy Tuck painful?

Dr. Azouz performs a variety of techniques to minimize pain with a Tummy Tuck.  These include local and regional nerve blocks, compression, cold therapy and more.  Many patients report minimal pain with their tummy tuck.

Do the results of a Tummy Tuck last?

The results of a Tummy Tuck do last.  This is especially true if a patient remains at approximately the same weight.  Many patients have gained significant weight after a Tummy Tuck but still report that they have a flat abdomen which was better than before.

What if I get pregnant after a Tummy Tuck?

Patients can still get pregnant after a Tummy Tuck.  Dr. Azouz recommends that patients not plan a Tummy Tuck if they think they are getting pregnant within a year of surgery.  Dr. Azouz has seen skin retraction in patients who have gotten pregnant years after their Tummy Tuck. These patients still reverted to their post-Tummy Tuck bodies.

Does a Tummy Tuck remove stretch marks?

Yes, a Tummy Tuck removes stretch marks within the skin excision of a Tummy Tuck.  A Tummy Tuck is an excellent way to remove stretch marks from the lower abdomen.

Where are the scars located in a Tummy Tuck?

A Tummy Tuck usually involves a scar hidden within the underwear line and a scar around the belly button.  The belly button is a scar from the loss of the umbilical cord at birth. This means that belly button scars are usually camouflaged once they fade.

When will I see the results of a Tummy Tuck?

Tummy tuck results will be seen once the bruising and swelling subsides.  Patients usually see significant improvement in their abdomen within six weeks after surgery.  Patients report that their abdomen will continue to look better over time. Some patients report maximal improvement within one year after surgery while others sometimes report that they look even better at 18 months after surgery.

What should I eat after my Tummy Tuck?

Dr. Azouz will review nutrition with his patients after surgery.  There are a variety of wound healing products available to improve healing after surgery.  Silicone gel and silicone gel sheeting can be helpful to help scars fade faster. Some patients report that dietary supplements can also speed up wound healing.

What is the best age for a Tummy Tuck?

Dr. Azouz performs Tummy Tucks in patients of varied ages.  In general the younger the better. Some patients who are healthy can have Tummy Tucks into their sixties.  Dr. Azouz has also performed Tummy Tucks in patients who are in their 20s and this usually involves post-bariatric patients.  Generally, patients will undergo Tummy Tucks in their 30s to 50s.

Look and Feel Great this Summer with a Tummy Tuck

For some, wearing a bathing suit in public can cause self-consciousness and even stress due to areas of fat and sagging skin on the abdomen. Many patients experience these symptoms due to massive weight loss or pregnancy. A tummy tuck can greatly improve the abdominal contours, so you can feel confident with your body this summer.

The Procedure

Oftentimes, the abdominal muscles can become weakened and separated, especially when patients experience pregnancy. A tummy tuck can tighten these abdominal walls, while also removing excess fat and skin on the abdomen. This results in a slimmer body contour.

While there is some downtime required after a tummy tuck, patients find that recovery time is definitely worth the results and the many benefits associated.

Benefits of a Tummy Tuck

Individuals can experience many benefits after undergoing tummy tuck surgery. Not only can this procedure restore a flat tummy, patients can also look and feel better in clothing and swimwear. Gone will be the days when you miss out on fun in the sun! Also, any scarring produced will be hidden under the bikini line, and can easily be hidden from view.

Are You a Good Candidate?

If you have tried to rid yourself of excess abdominal fat and skin with diet and exercise to no avail, you may be a good tummy tuck candidate. Patients should be at a stable weight, be physically healthy, be finished having children, and not smoke to see optimal results.

Individuals in the Dallas, TX area who are considering tummy tuck surgery can learn more by contacting Azouz Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery. We would be happy to schedule your consultation with Dr. Azouz.

Your Tummy Tuck Prep Guide

You’ve had your consultations, evaluations, and your lab tests— the day of your tummy tuck is finally almost here! But before you walk in for your tummy tuck, here are a few last-minute things you should know about healing, as well as a checklist to be prepared.

Healing

You will need two weeks of little to no activity including time off from work, care for your children, pets, laundry, cleaning, cooking, etc. The first two to three days are the most painful and tiresome, but your discomfort, swelling, and bruising will slowly subside. Be sure to have an area where you can lay that keeps your upper body elevated, such as a recliner or several pillows for your bed.

Your Pre-surgery Checklist

  • Clean— After a few days of relaxing, it may drive you nuts to have a messy house! If this sounds like you, it will help avoid the urge to move around too much.
  • Arrange for some assistance— If you’re a “do it yourselfer,” this may be the hardest part. You will need assistance changing, getting out of bed, etc. for the first few days.
  • Food prep— Unless you have someone to cook for you, you will need to prepare two weeks of meals in advance. We suggest Jell-O, pudding, frozen dinners, or freezable food like soup.
  • Meds— You will be prescribed pain medication to assist you in the healing process. Make sure to purchase these as well as the suggested dressings and bandages beforehand.
  • Shower— This may sound silly, but you will not be able to shower for about two to five days after because your drains cannot get wet!
  • Entertainment— Find things to pass the time. You could catch up on your reading, play board games, or simply enjoy your favorite movie.

Is a Tummy Tuck Right for You?

Have you always dreamed of a toned tummy,
but have stubborn, loose skin and can’t seem to lose the flab?
You’re not alone.

Excess skin can be caused by:

  • Major or minor weight loss
  • A pregnancy or pregnancies that have loosened your abdominals
  • Genetic laxity

Unfortunately, excess skin caused by either will not shed from a healthy diet or exercise.  However, before you contact a plastic surgeon, there are a few questions you should consider.

What are my options?

There are various kinds of tummy tuck procedures. Each procedure involves removal of extra skin and body contouring to bring your body back to its natural curvature. Before your consultation, here are three different types of tummy tucks your doctor may suggest:

Mini-tummy Tuck

If you’re concerned with loose skin particularly below your belly button, possibly from laxity, the mini tuck may be a good option for you. This procedure requires less recovery time and a smaller incision.

 Full Tummy Tuck

Full procedures are done on patients with extra skin from pregnancies, weight loss, or laxity. Excess skin is removed from your belly button to your bikini line.

Extended Tummy Tuck

Extended procedures are performed if your loose skin is around your entire stomach and love handles, typically from major weight loss or several pregnancies.

When is the right time?

It is important to factor timing of the procedure. For example, if you plan to have kids or foresee additional weight fluctuations, you should wait. Significant changes in your abdominal area can cause more stretching and loosening of the skin.

Do you fit any of these three profiles? If you are located near the Dallas, TX area, click here to Learn more about tummy tucks or schedule a consultation today!

Prepare for Your Tummy Tuck

A tummy tuck is a procedure used to remove excess fat around the waist and lower abdomen. Scheduling your tummy tuck surgery can be an exciting time, but it can also leave you feeling unsure with how to prepare. Below are a few tips on how to get ready for your tummy tuck transformation.

Quit Smoking

If you smoke, it is advised that you quit smoking at least six weeks prior to surgery. Being in the best health possible is vital for a successful and stress-free recovery. Smoking can prohibit healthy healing and cause complications.

Prepare The Home

Prepare your home for your recovery time. Create a comfortable space to recover the first few days’ post-surgery. Lay out a few books and magazines or your favorite DVD’s. Grab a few extra blankets and a water bottle as well as pillows to keep your body elevated. It is important to get as much rest as possible the first few days.

Recruit Helping Hands

Make sure to arrange for a ride home and recruit someone to assist you following surgery. You will need someone to drive you home, and it will also be helpful to have someone take care of any children or pets you may have during the day.

Undergoing a tummy tuck will leave you feeling confident and excited for your transformation. If you are interested in a tummy tuck or have any questions, contact Dr. Azouz Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery in Dallas, Texas for more information.

The Difference between Liposuction and Tummy Tuck

With summer fast approaching, patients in the Dallas area are looking forward to more fun in the sun! Both men and women want to look their best when the weather gets warmer, and two popular body contouring procedures, liposuction and a tummy tuck, can help them to achieve their body goals. Check out the difference between liposuction and tummy tuck below!

Liposuction is a great option for both men and women who have been unsuccessful in reducing areas of stubborn fat through diet and exercise. This procedure can remove excess fat in a selection of areas, including the hips, buttocks, thighs, abdomen, love handles, arms, calves, knees and under the chin. There are different liposuction techniques available, including ultrasonic, power-assisted, and tumescent options.

A tummy tuck is often used after pregnancy or major weight loss, when patients can experience areas of sagging skin. The main difference between liposuction and a tummy tuck is that liposuction cannot eliminate loose skin. During a tummy tuck, both excess fat and loose skin on the abdominal area is removed, and underlying abdominal muscles are tightened.

Regardless of which of these procedures you choose to undergo, it is important to understand that they are not intended as weight loss solutions. Those who are 10% of their ideal body weight tend to see the best results with these procedures.

If you are interested in liposuction or a tummy tuck, contact Azouz Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery to schedule your consultation.
