Why Do We Get Scars?

Scars form with the deep layers of our skin is damaged. This layer, called the dermis, has the capillaries, sweat glands and nerve endings. Following skin trauma, the body attempts to repair itself through various processes, one of which is laying down new collagen fibers. Collagen is a naturally occurring protein produced by the body. These new fibers close the gap in the wound but may feel or look different than the surrounding skin. If the body is hyperreactive to the trauma, too much collagen can be produced, resulting in raised scars, like keloids and hypertrophic scars. Other scars, such as those from acne, may be sunken due to lack of collagen or loss of understructures, like fat or muscle.
