Microtia Surgery
Microtia is a rare congenital condition where the outer ear is underdeveloped. The majority of patients with microtia have some part of the ear, though it is malformed, and will usually have an earlobe. If the ear is completely missing, this is known as anotia, and it is a different diagnosis. Very often, microtia is only observed on one side of the head. In fact, fewer than 20 percent of patients have both ears affected by microtia. Dr. Azouz performs microtia surgery to restore the structure of the ear.
Surgical Rebuilding of the Ear
Microtia reconstruction is completed in stages. First, the ear is rebuilt and attached to the side of the head. Later, the ear is separated from the head, so it protrudes normally. A third procedure can reshape the ear for added definition and a blended appearance. Dr. Azouz takes great care to rebuild the ear with a final outcome that does not draw attention to itself and has a natural ear shape.
Surgery can be performed between the ages of 7 to 10, but it is recommended that you seek a consultation with a qualified plastic surgeon as soon as possible after diagnosis. Your plastic surgeon will want to track the development of the rest of the facial features, and the ear that is not affected.
Although it may be difficult to wait for the surgery, it is important to ensure the correct proportions and shape for the most natural appearance. This is not readily evident until children are older, and an experienced plastic surgeon can make well-informed decisions about projected facial features.
