Liposuction Recovery with Dallas Plastic Surgeon Dr. David Azouz: Everything You Need to Know and More

Considering liposuction?

You are not alone and you likely have friends who have considered and even had liposuction without you knowing.  Liposuction is one of Dallas plastic surgeon Dr. David Azouz’s most popular procedures.  Liposuction is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic surgery procedures performed in the US and is one of the least reported to friends and families.

Can liposuction be performed in consultation?

Liposuction is a surgical procedure that is not exempt from the risks associated with any surgery. Although liposuction has an incredibly high safety profile, it must be performed according to standardized protocols and guidelines.  Dr. Azouz strives for the best and safest experience for his patients.  Dr. Azouz only operates in accredited operating rooms and hospitals.  Plastic surgeon Dr. David Azouz is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and follows the ethical codes and standards established by the society.

What do I need to know before I have liposuction?

The first and foremost is to find the right plastic surgeon.   A board certified plastic surgeon like Dr. David Azouz has the knowledge and experience in liposuction to perform the surgery effectively and safely.  With your consultation Dr. Azouz will assess the indications, possible contraindications, and areas to be treated.  Dr. Azouz will review expected results, detail the recovery and share before and after pictures from similar patients.

How long is the postoperative period after liposuction?

Dr. Azouz performs liposuction as a day surgery.  Duration of recovery does depend on the amount of fat removed, history of the patient, and duration of surgery.  In general Dr. Azouz performs liposuction under sedation so that a patient does not remember the surgery and is sleeping.  Sedation allows for the patient to be “asleep” but does not involve placing a breathing tube past the vocal cords.  This results in a much more rapid recovery the day of surgery and is associated with a higher safety profile.Dr. Azouz does recommend that you are accompanied postoperatively for the first 12 hours, by a relative or friend.

Dr. Azouz can arrange for a nurse experienced in plastic surgery care to stay with the patient the night after surgery if they do not have Dallas based friends or family to help them after their plastic surgery.

The first days after liposuction:

After the first postoperative day, your body will begin to recover.  Each patient recovers in his or her own way and a variety of factors affect recovery including:

Age

General health,

Smoking status

Physical fitness before surgery

During the first few days, it is expected to be sore and inflamed but Dr. Azouz focuses on the best enhanced recovery protocols to minimize pain after surgery.  The majority of patients report “soreness” as if they had a major workout rather than pain.  It is common for patients to not take any pain pills or minimal pain pills after liposuction.  Dr. Azouz’s enhanced recovery techniques include:

ENHANCED

RECOVERY

AFTER

PLASTIC SURGERY

Tiny incisions that are camouflaged

Use of long acting local anesthetics

Specialized recovery garments

Advanced anesthesia techniques

Plastic surgeon Dr. Azouz recommends that patients stay in their compression for the first few days after surgery. Post-operative girdles and compression help reduce swelling, pain and help define a cosmetic shape.

The first postoperative month

Dr. Azouz will recommend wearing the post-surgical garment continuously and will guide when to remove compression for daily hygiene.  Dr. Azouz recommends guides when to avoid heavy and light activity after liposuction.  Most patients are able to return to light activity such as light cardio, yoga, elliptical and weights between 10 days and 2 weeks after surgery.  Bodybuilders who undergo liposuction and removal of their gynecomastia are able to tone their legs, and biceps, for example, two weeks after surgery in most cases.

A healthy diet can enhance recovery after liposuction with Dr. Azouz in Dallas

Optimal recovery tips include:

1) Eating well- light meats, salads, fruits, and vegetables.

2) A unique hydration schedule designed by Dr. Azouz.

3) Walking between at least 15 and 30 minutes a day and heavy exercise regularly from week six after surgery.

 4) A bowel routine based on natural cathartics such as fruit juices and fiber.

Combination Plastic Surgery: Face, Breast, and Body

What cosmetic procedures can be combined and why would that be beneficial?

Combining plastic surgery procedures is extremely popular and involves a plastic surgeon performing multiple plastic or cosmetic surgeries in one day.  This is a great option for patients who have many different concerns they would like to address. Dr. David Azouz is a board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon in Dallas, TX who performs many combination procedures to help his patients reach their goals in a safe, efficient, and effective manner. Dr. Azouz is highly experienced and offers patients the benefits of a natural-appearing look with minimal scarring from his combination procedures. The most well-known combination procedure is the mommy makeover, but there are many procedures that can be combined. Facelifts, tummy tucks, liposuction, and breast surgeries are all popular surgeries that can be done together.

Benefits of Combination Plastic Surgeries

There are many different benefits that come from performing two or more surgeries simultaneously. Mainly, it cuts down on the need for multiple surgery days which allows a patient one recovery. Additionally, combining procedures often cuts down on the cost of surgery and anesthesia.

Candidates for Combination Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery

The best candidates for combination surgery:

  • Require moderate improvement of the areas to be treated
  • Are in good overall health
  • Are non-smokers
  • Have realistic expectations

Dr. Azouz recommends that patients with areas that require significant skin and soft tissue resection stage their procedures rather than have them done on the same day.  The right combination of procedures can achieve the results a patient desires and this is best achieved through expressing your goals with Dr. Azouz.  Dr. Azouz is committed to performing plastic and cosmetic surgery as safely and efficiently as possible.

Combining Plastic Surgery with other non-plastic surgery procedures

Patients often desire to combine cosmetic and plastic surgery operations with other types of surgery including:

  • Hysterectomy
  • Removal of gallbladder
  • Functional rhinoplasty
  • Hernia repair

Dr. Azouz is able to coordinate performing cosmetic surgery with other noncosmetic surgeries with a variety of different surgeons.  Often Dr. Azouz will work with an OBGYN to perform a hysterectomy and tummy tuck together.  Hernia repairs are often performed at the same time as a panniculectomy (tummy tuck).

Recovery Time

One of the main questions Dr. Azouz is asked during his consultations with patients is how much recovery time they will need for their procedure. If a patient has multiple concerns and requires multiple procedures, this adds to time spent recovering from surgery. With a combination procedure, you get one recovery time.  A mommy makeover may involve a drain-less abdominoplasty or mini-tummy tuck, liposuction, and breast augmentation in the same day.   Men often desire liposuction of the abdomen to be done concurrently with liposuction and removal of gynecomastia of the chest.  The recovery time for each procedure is about four to six weeks until a patient can return to heavy exercise. Instead of having to heal for four to six weeks to or three different times, patients can get surgeries done on the same day so that they only go through one recovery.

How soon can you have cosmetic surgery after massive weight loss surgery (gastric bypass)?

Gastric bypass induces weight loss by both restrictive and absorptive methods.   This means that a patient will eat less food and less food will be absorbed through the patient’s digestive tract.  Patients will generally have their weight fluctuate for six months after surgery.  Dr. Azouz typically recommends having a stable weight for six months prior to surgery as well.  Patients who have had bariatric surgery (gastric sleeve or bypass) are typically excellent candidates for post-bariatric body contouring.  Combination procedures are often possible and include a variety of cosmetic surgeries of the body, breast, and face.

Possible combination surgery after bariatric procedures include:

Mommy makeover

Body lift with liposuction

Tummy tuck with liposuction

Facelift with eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty)

Breast lift with breast augmentation

Liposuction and removal of gynecomastia

Cost and Recovery

Along with the cut down on recovery time, combination procedures also cut down the cost. The cost of each individual procedure varies greatly. You have to add in the surgical facility, anesthesia, and medical devices to the total cost. By getting multiple procedures done in one surgery, this cuts down on the time spent in the operating room and anesthesia costs being repeated. Dr. Azouz will give you an estimated cost of your unique combination procedure during your in-person consultation.

Popular Combination Plastic Surgeries

To help his patients save on recovery time and cost, Dr. Azouz performs many of his procedures in combination with others. Due to the drain-less technique accompanying his procedures, patients can enjoy a less complex healing period. One of his most popular procedures is the Drainless abdominoplasty. Other popular combination procedures are:

  • Mommy Makeover (breast and abdomen)
  • Liposuction and Removal of gynecomastia
  • Liposuction and Abdominoplasty
  • Breast Lift and Reduction
  • Rhinoplasty and Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty)
  • Facelift and Eyelid surgery

Liposuction: Recovery Timeline after surgery

Liposuction is one of the most common cosmetic procedures in plastic surgery.  The recovery time following liposuction is dependent on the individual patient, on the number of areas being addressed (abdomen, chest, neck, thighs, knees, legs, arms, etc) and the nature of the liposuction being performed. Liposuction can be performed on its own or in combination with other plastic surgery procedures.  Dr. Azouz routinely performs liposuction in combination with a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), breast augmentation, breast lift (mastopexy), breast reduction, male breast reduction (gynecomastia), neck lift/facelift, body lift, and with abdominal wall reconstruction.

Dr. Azouz is able to use liposuction in both aesthetic (cosmetic) surgery patients and in patients undergoing reconstructive surgery. Recovery after liposuction is often easy and quick.  Even patients with a complex medical history, heavy patients, older patients, and those with a history of previous surgery can be candidates for liposuction surgery.

The routine experience for patients undergoing Liposuction Surgery with Dr. Azouz is as follows. The liposuction experience can vary according to different plastic surgery needs.

Prior to Liposuction Surgery:

Dr. Azouz is a plastic surgeon based in Dallas who will meet in consultation with each patient individually, prior to surgery.  Dr. Azouz advises the patient on which sites they are a candidate for when planning for liposuction.  There are six stages during Dr. Azouz’s liposuction consultation. Dr. Azouz almost never uses drains with liposuction.  He will advise his patients which compression garments will be most effective for the quickest post-operative recovery after liposuction.

Cost of Liposuction

The cost of liposuction will vary according to the number of sites desired to be improved, the overall complexity of the surgery, and the patients’ specific desires.  Some patients elect to combine liposuction procedures with other procedures such as breast augmentation, tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), male breast reduction (gynecomastia), breast lift (mastopexy), body lift, eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty), facelift, labiaplasty, monsplasty, arm lift and with a variety of other plastic surgery procedures in order to have one recovery and one cost for their anesthesia and operating room fees.

The Night before Liposuction Surgery

Dr. Azouz advises his patients to shampoo and shower and then to shampoo and shower again the morning prior to surgery.  Dr. Azouz will recommend when it is best to stop eating and drinking the night before liposuction surgery.

During Liposuction Surgery

Dr. Azouz is able to perform liposuction surgery on patients with a combination of local and sedation or with general anesthesia.  Most patients elect to have their liposuction under sedation and would rather not have an endotracheal tube placed.  Dr. Azouz works with anesthesiologists who are committed to providing the patient with the most optimal experience.

Dr. Azouz aims for a world-class result with the best experience possible

Dr. Azouz utilizes many diverse techniques to provide each patient with a safe, ideal, top-notch and comfortable surgery while always minimizing the risks and complications. While each patient has their own unique experience, many patients report having little pain with liposuction surgery.  Many patients have repeatedly reported that the experience was one of the best medical experiences.  They also often say that liposuction results are life-changing.

Two to Three Days Post Liposuction Surgery

Liposuction surgery is often reported to be painless however analgesic medications are still prescribed who report mild discomfort. Patients will wear their compression garments in the post-operative period.  Patients often elect to have their surgery on a day that is followed with one to two days off of work.  However many patients return to work more quickly without any detriment.  In this time period, they reduce their level of physical activity.  Most liposuction patients return to desk work after one to two days.

One to Three Weeks Post Liposuction Surgery

One to two weeks after liposuction patients will avoid exercise and most patients do not have any reportable pain.  Many liposuction patients can go back to desk work or light duties at this point.  Full compression is utilized during this time period as advised by Dr. Azouz.  All stitches will usually be removed from the small liposuction incisions between 2 to 3 weeks after surgery.

Three to Six Weeks Post Liposuction Surgery

At three to four weeks after liposuction surgery, results become much more dramatic.  Bruising and swelling usually improve dramatically in the first three to four weeks.  Most liposuction patients can return back to light physical activity after the third week including heavy walking, elliptical, light yoga, and light aerobics.

Six Weeks Post Liposuction Surgery

Liposuction patients are usually released to full activity after six weeks. Most patients can additionally return to all physical activities or exercise routines. This includes basketball, hockey, football, heavy yoga, trampoline, skydiving, and scuba diving.

The Difference between Liposuction and Tummy Tuck

With summer fast approaching, patients in the Dallas area are looking forward to more fun in the sun! Both men and women want to look their best when the weather gets warmer, and two popular body contouring procedures, liposuction and a tummy tuck, can help them to achieve their body goals. Check out the difference between liposuction and tummy tuck below!

Liposuction is a great option for both men and women who have been unsuccessful in reducing areas of stubborn fat through diet and exercise. This procedure can remove excess fat in a selection of areas, including the hips, buttocks, thighs, abdomen, love handles, arms, calves, knees and under the chin. There are different liposuction techniques available, including ultrasonic, power-assisted, and tumescent options.

A tummy tuck is often used after pregnancy or major weight loss, when patients can experience areas of sagging skin. The main difference between liposuction and a tummy tuck is that liposuction cannot eliminate loose skin. During a tummy tuck, both excess fat and loose skin on the abdominal area is removed, and underlying abdominal muscles are tightened.

Regardless of which of these procedures you choose to undergo, it is important to understand that they are not intended as weight loss solutions. Those who are 10% of their ideal body weight tend to see the best results with these procedures.

If you are interested in liposuction or a tummy tuck, contact Azouz Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery to schedule your consultation.

Tips to Maintain Your Liposuction Results

Liposuction is great for stubborn body fat that does not respond to a healthy diet and exercise. By removing excess fat deposits on areas of the body such as the thighs, abdomen, or hips, liposuction improves the contours of your body and proportion. There are steps you should take that are vital for long lasting results following your liposuction procedure. Check out these three tips for the best results!

  1. Create Healthy Habits Before Liposuction. Liposuction is a great tool to reach your goal weight, but is not an alternative to weight loss. By starting healthy habits and working toward your aesthetic goals before your procedure will help you maintain those habits for long lasting results.
  2. Listen to Your Doctor. Azouz will provide you with a list of recovery protocol and tips and following these aftercare instructions will not only make for a successful recovery without complication, but will also provide long lasting results. Taking steps such as wearing your compression garment will reduce pain and swelling and prevent complication.
  3. Keep a Healthy Diet After. The most important step you can take to ensure your results last is eating the right foods filled with vitamins as well as exercise. Liposuction is not a permanent solution to fat loss but can have amazing results when you take the steps to take care of your body following your treatment.
