Will Breast Augmentation surgery help with Pigeon Chest Deformity?

Pigeon chest deformity, or Pectus carinatum, can leave women feeling self-conscious about their appearance. Thankfully, women have plastic surgery as an ally to minimize the appearance of the prominent sternum. Patients with pigeon chest deformity might undergo breast augmentation surgery to reduce the appearance of a bowed-out chest. Breast augmentation can often camouflage deformities of the chest wall. Breast augmentation surgery in Dallas with plastic surgeon Dr. Azouz can enhance a woman’s body image, recover self-confidence, and disguise the chest’s deformation.

What is Pigeon Chest Deformity?

Pigeon chest deformity is medically known as Pectus Carinatum. This congenital deformity occurs when the sternum protrudes outward, causing the ribcage and sternum to bow out. Some patients may also have depressions on the side of their chest. About one out of every 400 women has Pectus Carinatum, and the condition can result in asthma or other breathing problems but does not affect other functions, including those of the heart or lungs. Fortunately, breast augmentation surgery in Dallas can reduce the pigeon chest’s appearance and provide the patient with better life quality.

Can a Breast Augmentation surgery correct Pectus Carinatum?

Some patients with severe Pectus Carinatum will require surgery to correct the positioning of the sternum or ribcage. For other patients, the deformity does not cause severe medical issues, but patients may be dissatisfied with their chest appearance.

Women with pigeon chest deformity can, in some cases, disguise the appearance of this condition with breast augmentation. Strategic placement of suitable sized implants by plastic surgeon Dr. Azouzcan camouflage a pigeon chest appearance.

Choosing Breast Implants

When selecting implants to disguise the appearance of pigeon chest deformity, Dallas plastic surgeon Dr. David Azouz often recommends a high-profile implant. High-profile implants are taller than they are wide, meaning those implants project away from the chest, and consequently, further from the sternum. Besides, implants are placed behind the pectoralis muscle, a technique known as subpectoral placement. This further distracts from the projection of the chest wall in patients with Pectus Carinatum. Finally, the implants should be sufficient in size to reduce the appearance of the pigeon chest without being too large and out-of-proportion with the patient’s frame. Determining the correct implant size for the patient with pigeon chest deformity will be determined during a consultation with Dr. Azouz.

Patient care after Breast Augmentation surgery for Pectus Carinatum patients

Breast augmentation is a safe procedure. Patients with Pectus Carinatum are advised to take additional precautions after their surgery to maintain their results. Dr. David Azouz will instruct you on specific compression brassieres for optimal recovery after breast augmentation.
