Do you want to know more about liposuction vs. non-surgical body contouring to determine which is better for you? Here, you will find the answers to your questions. When it comes to fat reduction, it’s hard to beat liposuction.

Liposuction can remove unwanted fat, tighten the skin and provide both men and women with a more cosmetic figure. If you’ve been considering liposuction, then it’s important to make sure you can get the most out of your plastic surgery procedure.

Non-surgical body contouring is also popular, but many patients find themselves with minimal results as compared to liposuction. Here’s what to know about liposuction and why it remains one of the most effective means of body sculpting and fat reduction.

Fat Accumulation and Skin Laxity

Fat accumulation can occur at any age and can improve with diet and exercise. Some patients have stubborn fat, which does not improve despite healthy habits. Stubborn fat deposits are called “lipodystrophy” and occur throughout the body. Lipodystrophy is best treated with liposuction. Skin laxity is the result of a loss of collagen and elastin, two important proteins in the skin that maintain its elasticity. As early as your 30s, your body begins to produce less collagen as time goes on. This results in gradual sagging (especially combined with the effects of gravity). Mild sagging of the skin in combination with lipodystrophy is treated with liposuction.

Liposuction vs. Non-Surgical Body Contouring

For the vast majority of patients is hard to choose between liposuction vs. non-surgical body contouring procedures. With liposuction, fat is surgically removed from the body, and the patient has the most dramatic, permanent, and extensive results.

In non-surgical body contouring, a machine utilizes ultrasound, heat, cold, radiofrequency, vibrations, or other non-invasive technology to disrupt the fat cells. Fat cells are usually too robust to be effectively removed by these machines. Therefore, many patients feel as though they have little to any results from the majority of these machines. Skin tightening is also usually very mildly improved without surgery.

How do I know if I need liposuction?

man with arrows on her bodyIt’s always best to get an opinion from a board-certified plastic surgeon. However, there are some indicators that you can assess at home. The first is examining if you have classic areas of lipodystrophy. These areas include the neck, chest, lateral chest wall, abdomen, flanks, love handles, hips, back, banana rolls, knees, upper arms, thighs, and calves. Then it is essential to determine if these areas improve at all with diet and exercise. Areas that do not improve with diet and exercise are deemed “lipodystrophy” and are best treated with liposuction.

How long does liposuction last?

Liposuction is the permanent removal of fat cells from the body. If a patient maintains a stable weight, diet, and exercise routine, then liposuction can last for decades.

How much is liposuction?

Liposuction costs vary according to the areas treated, the health of the patient, surgical history, and candidacy for the surgery.

Will my waist get smaller with liposuction?

Liposuction can take inches off the waist. An abdominoplasty or tummy tuck is an option for patients who want the smallest waist, have many stretch marks, have poor skin quality, hernias, or need extensive skin removal.

Will the fat come back after liposuction?

Liposuction is the permanent removal of fat from the body. It is not the complete removal of fat from the body, so patients can still grow remaining fat cells if they do not maintain a healthy diet and exercise routine.

How soon after liposuction will I see results?

Liposuction results can be seen within days after surgery. That being said, swelling can last for many months after surgery. Most patients will see results within six weeks and then will see the maximal results within 18 months.
