Explore Breast Implants Options and Breast Augmentation Surgery

If you are considering breast augmentation surgery (placement of breast implants), it is recommended to start exploring the different breast implants options with a board-certified plastic surgeon in your area to help you to determine what is the best choice for you and fulfill your aesthetic expectations. With that being said, it is helpful to go into your first appointment knowing some of the basics about breast implants and breast augmentation surgery and address with your surgeon any doubts or concerns. Here we share the basic information you need to know about breast implants and breast augmentation surgery.

Breast Implants Options for Breast Augmentation

Before going to your first appointment, spend some time thinking about what you want your new silhouette to look like. When you are ready schedule your appointment with a breast augmentation plastic surgeon to explore the different breast implants options available. Dallas Plastic Surgeon Dr. Azouz is a great resource to help you to find the best breast implants for you and create a surgical plan to achieve your aesthetic goals.

Anesthesia used for Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation procedures can be performed under either general anesthesia or IV sedation. In nearly all cases, Dr. Azouz will use a combination of local anesthetic and IV sedation. This means that you are asleep but do not have a machine that is breathing for you.  Sedation is often considered much safer than general anesthesia.  Dr. Azouz has found that the recovery period is much quicker and patients report less nausea when local and sedation are used compared to a general anesthetic.

Breast Augmentation Incisions

There are several incision placements that may be used to complete a breast augmentation procedure. The goal is to minimize scarring after healing is complete.  Dallas plastic surgeon Dr. Azouz will explain these options and which one is best for your procedure during a consultation. Generally speaking, a breast augmentation can be completed using one of the following incisions:

Breast Augmentation with Dr. Azouz | Dallas & Plano
  • Periareolar incisions are made in a semi-circular pattern around the nipple and areola. Any resulting scarring is camouflaged within the areola.
  • Inframammary incisions are made just below the breast crease.
  • Transaxillary incisions are made within the armpit. This is more common with saline implants which can be filled after placing them within the breast pocket.

Inserting and Placing Breast Implants

Once incisions have been made, Dr. Azouz is ready to place the breast implants. The technique for this step will again vary depending on the type of implants you have chosen and your desired results. Breast implants can be placed either below the pectoral muscle, known as a submuscular placement, or between the muscle and natural breast tissue, known as a submammary or subglandular placement. Submuscular placements typically create a more natural result, especially for those who have a smaller amount of natural breast tissue. This placement is also associated with a lower rate of capsular contracture or rippling in the case of saline implants. Subglandular placement is beneficial for those who do not have a pectoral muscle especially in cases of Poland Syndrome. During a consultation, Dr. Azouz will help you choose the best option according to the results you are looking for.

Closing Breast Augmentation Incisions

After successfully placing the breast implants, Dr. Azouz will then close the incisions. This is typically done with a combination of sutures and skin adhesive or surgical tape. After closing incisions, dressings and bandages will be placed over the incisions, and you will wear a compression bra to keep the breasts in place as you heal. When surgery is complete, you will be given detailed instructions on caring for the incision sites.  At times a breast augmentation can be combined with a mini lift or full lift (mastopexy).

Recovery and Results After Breast Augmentation

Immediately after a breast augmentation, you can expect to feel tired and sore and should prioritize rest, especially for the first 48 hours. Swelling and redness at incision sites can both be normal.  Dr. Azouz uses a variety of techniques for minimal pain and rapid recovery after breast implants are placed.

Through your recovery period, Dr. Azouz will explain exercises you should perform to help avoid capsular contracture and maintain soft breast tissue. He will also outline when you can safely return to all normal activities, such as your exercise routine. Most patients are ready to return to work and non-strenuous activity within a few days after a breast augmentation.

The Pros and Cons of Areola Reconstruction

The areola and nipples can often be disproportionate to the breasts, whether this is due to changes in the size of the breasts, pregnancy, and breastfeeding, or genetic factors. Many patients have other abnormalities of the areola and nipples, including gynecomastia in men or inverted nipples. Fortunately, all of these can be resolved through a relatively simple cosmetic procedure. Before you choose to move forward with an areola reconstruction, however, it’s important to understand the pros and cons of the procedure.

Who Can Benefit from Areola Reconstruction Surgery?

Primarily, areola reconstruction surgery serves to change the shape or reduce the size of the areola. It is commonly performed alongside a breast reduction or breast lift, but may also be chosen as an independent procedure.

Candidates often include those who have had a previous breast surgery, which can impact the areola negatively. Areola reduction is also commonly performed on patients who have increased areola size after breastfeeding. Men suffering from gynecomastia may also be candidates for areola or nipple reduction surgery.

Finally, some patients choose a procedure to repair their inverted nipples, which may be the result of scarring or genetic factors. The steps of this procedure differ from a standard areola or nipple reconstruction, but inverted nipple repair is still an available option for patients.

How is Areola Reconstruction Performed?

In a typical areola reconstruction, the procedure is performed by making an incision around the areola and removing excess skin and tissue. Any resulting scarring is well hidden in the border of the areola.

Repairing inverted nipples is completed by making small, hidden incisions to remove scar tissue or other connective tissues holding the nipple in an inverted position.

Are There Risks for Areola Reconstruction?

Like any surgery, there are some risks for areola reconstruction. However, complications are not common.

Some possible complications include bleeding, infection, nerve damage, loss of sensation, and scarring. For some, the ability to breastfeed can also be effected, so most surgeons recommend waiting until you no longer wish to have children before having the procedure.

Dr. Azouz will thoroughly review your health to determine whether you’re a safe candidate for the surgery and explain steps for your recovery period so that you can best avoid any complications from areola reconstruction.

What is Recovery Like?

During the first few days after areola reconstruction, you can expect some swelling and discomfort, though pain can be managed with medication. Serious physical activity should be avoided as you heal. Dr. Azouz will monitor your healing during follow-up appointments and advise when you can return to exercising and performing other strenuous activity. Patients should also be careful to protect the breasts for several months after the procedure, including wearing a supportive sports bra when exercising or playing sports.

Daddy Do-Over in Dallas: Custom Male Plastic Surgery procedures

The number of men seeking Daddy Do-Over in Dallas is increasing every year.  More and more men are looking for the best and most experienced plastic surgeons to achieve their goals.  A daddy do-over combining gynecomastia or male breast reduction and belly liposuction is more popular than ever.  The American Society of Plastic Surgeons reported in 2019 that since 2000, the number of procedures performed on men rose by 29% to 1.3 million procedures!  Dr. Azouz performs a high volume of cosmetic combination surgeries in men with a minimally invasive approach.

Although many of the most popular plastic surgery procedures (rhinoplasty, blepharoplasty, and liposuction) are often performed on their own, they can also be combined to reduce total downtime and save on the costs of multiple surgeries. This is sometimes called a “Daddy Do-Over,” a reference to the female equivalent of a “Mommy Makeover.”  A “daddy do-over in Dallas” can involve combing a male chest surgery with abdominal liposuction, tummy tuck, or mini tummy tuck.  Combining other plastic surgery procedures can be performed at the same time.

Daddy Do-Overs in Dallas is Highly Customizable

A daddy do-over is tailored to the man seeking cosmetic treatment. Consisting of facial, body, and sometimes male breast reduction surgeries, this unique surgical plan allows men to achieve a significant amount of improvement in a single session. Patients can pick and choose between several cosmetic procedures in consultation with board-certified Dallas- based plastic surgeons Dr. David Azouz or Dr. Solomon Azouz.

Common Aesthetic Concerns Among Men

Men typically strive for cosmetic goals that differ from those women hope to achieve through plastic surgery. Although several cosmetic principles overlap. The most popular concerns men seek to correct with plastic surgery include:

  • Liposuction – Body contouring can help men stave off the dreaded “dad bod”
  • Gynecomastia – Treating excess breast tissue can help people feel more confident both with and without a shirt on
  • Rhinoplasty – Achieving facial harmony and looking younger can be simply a matter of adjusting the shape of the nose
  • Eyelid surgery – Rejuvenating the appearance of the eyes helps anyone look more alert and younger without looking “worked-on”.
  • Male Facelift – Correcting facial wrinkles and laxity caused by aging is an effective way to take years off the appearance

Regardless of the cosmetic procedure, a man chooses, most men strive to avoid a feminized appearance. Dr. Azouz is committed to a natural, sculpted appearance with enhanced recovery and a minimally invasive technique in his male plastic surgery.

Good Candidates for a Daddy Do-Over

Although not everyone is eligible for a daddy do-over in Dallas, men who are in general good health and are realistic in their expectations are the best candidates for male plastic surgery.  The eligibility of any one person depends on the type of cosmetic surgery desired, as less-invasive procedures are typically available to a greater number of people, even those with controlled medical problems such as higher BMI (Body Mass Index), diabetes, and hypertension.

Outcomes of Daddy Do-Overs

Every man’s daddy do-over in Dallas is highly personalized and customized to address his unique concerns and conditions. There is generally overwhelmingly very high satisfaction with the daddy do-over procedure. Many men feel renewed confidence in their appearance, which can help spur a determination for a healthier lifestyle.

The recovery process after a daddy do-over varies widely by the types of procedures performed. Those who have surgeries like a tummy tuck will have longer downtime requirements than those who have more minimally invasive procedures, like eyelid surgery or liposuction. Always follow all of Dr. Azouz’s instructions for restricting activity and certain medications or substances for the best and quickest recovery process.

Gynecomastia surgery: Five Post Operative Tips for your Recovery

Gynecomastia surgery also known as male breast reduction surgery can be life-changing cosmetic surgery for men with gynecomastia. The postoperative recovery is essential for the best results. During a consultation with Dr. Azouz, he will thoroughly explain everything you need to know about the recovery process, but just in case you’re curious, here are five postoperative gynecomastia surgery steps that Dr. Azouz recommends.

1) Wait to Return to Your Daily Exercise Routine

After gynecomastia surgery, you need to give yourself a week or two before getting back into your full daily aerobic exercise routine.  This means no strenuous physical activity or exercise, allowing your body time to completely heal. However, just a few days (frequently one to two) after your surgery you will be able to add in light daily activities such as working on the computer, desk work or business meetings.

2) Wear Your Compression for your Drainless Gynecomastia Surgery

After gynecomastia surgery Dr. Azouz requires you to wear compression garments. The reason for continuous compression of the surgical area is to decrease swelling and promote proper healing.  Dr. Azouz performs gynecomastia surgery without drains. During the healing process skin retraction is promoted by Dr. Azouz’s plastic surgery techniques and compression garments.

3) Good Posture Matters

Good posture is a key factor to the recovery of gynecomastia surgery. Hunching and slouching is commonly seen in gynecomastia patients as they subconsciously are trying to hide their unwanted gynecomastia.  After you’re surgery you will have nothing to hide, standing up straight with your shoulders rolled back will promoted the healing process and decrease future postural problems.

4) Tissue Massage at the right time

After the first three weeks of healing (or as recommended by Dr. Azouz), you should start massaging the surgical area to help soften scar tissue which helps the skin lay flat and evenly. Dr. Azouz will advise if this tissue massage can be done with your hands or a roller. The massage routine should be done several times a day during recovery as advised by your plastic surgeon Dr. Azouz.

5) Stay appropriately hydrated

Hydration is an important factor in the healing process. The recommended daily fluid intake is 2 liters for most patients.  Dr. Azouz will advise when a patient should increase or decrease their daily intake of fluid.  It is important to avoid salty or fried foods after gynecomastia surgery as they can cause fluid retention and extra swelling.  Saunas and hot tubs should also be avoided as they can lead to an increase in postoperative swelling.  Dr. Azouz guides his patients and releases them for a variety of activities including heavy exercise and use of pools, Jacuzzis and saunas.

Dallas Plastic Surgeon Dr. David Azouz discusses Tummy Tucks: Frequently Asked Questions, Definition, Surgery Recovery, Cost and More!

What is a Tummy Tuck?

A Tummy Tuck is also known as abdominoplasty and is a procedure performed by a plastic surgeon to remove excess skin, fat, and repair weakened muscles in the abdomen to create a slimmer profile. This is a very popular procedure for women who have undergone childbirth to help bring them back to their pre-baby bodies.

Patients who have diastasis recti, where the muscles in the abdomen are spread apart, can benefit from this surgery.  Men and women with hernias are also candidates for repair via a Tummy Tuck approach. Patients with significant weight loss can benefit in their workouts, with intimacy, and with their general comfort by removing the excess skin.

What is diastasis recti?

A diastasis of the rectus abdominus muscles refers to the laxity or weakening of the major muscles in the abdomen.  These muscles separate and cause a protuberant or “bulging” abdomen. Some patients feel that their abdomen ”looks pregnant” because of the weakening of their rectus diastasis.

Does Dr. Azouz do a lot of Tummy Tucks?

YES! The Tummy Tuck is one of the most popular procedures performed by Dr. Azouz. Patients who are looking for a Tummy Tuck procedure usually have many questions about the procedure. Dr. Azouz takes ample time during the consultation appointment to answer all of the questions that his patients have.   Dr. Azouz combines his drain-less Tummy Tucks with liposuctions and an ultra-low incision line. Patients can often conceal their incisions in even the most skimpy undergarments or bikinis after their Tummy Tuck because of the low incision. Dr. Azouz also performs mons liposuction which is critical to avoiding a bulge after a Tummy Tuck.

Can I have a monsplasty at the same time as my Tummy Tuck?

Yes! Dr. Azouz routinely performs monsplasty/liposuction in men and women during a Tummy Tuck.

Which Tummy Tuck Procedure is Right for Me?

There are a few different modalities of the Tummy Tuck surgery. These are the full abdominoplasty, mini-abdominoplasty, and no-drain abdominoplasty. Different modalities will work for different patients based on their specific needs.

Full Abdominoplasty

The full Tummy Tuck involves a horizontal incision below the lower abdomen and an incision around the navel. This procedure removes excess skin while also repairing the muscles and pulling them to a tighter position. This is commonly used for patients who have issues from pregnancy or major weight fluctuations such as patients who have had Bariatric Surgery (Post Bariatric).

Mini Abdominoplasty

With the mini Tummy Tuck, only one incision smaller incision along the lower abdomen is needed. It pulls the skin to a tighter position. It is best used for minor cases of laxity. The best candidates for this procedure have most of their laxity below the navel.

No-Drain Abdominoplasty

Dr.  David Azouz has been performing no drain Tummy Tucks for over 25 years. This technique is to reduce the amount of fluid that is built-up after surgery, by closing off the space where fluid would accumulate.  No drain (drainless) surgery avoids painful drains, avoids excess scarring and does not require the frequent monitoring and emptying of fluid.

During the consultation appointment, Dr. Azouz will examine your abdominal skin and muscle laxity, go over your medical history, and learn about your goals and concerns to recommend the best method of Tummy Tuck for you.

Frequently Asked Tummy Tuck Questions

What is the Tummy Tuck Recovery Like?

Recovery is different for each patient. Dr. Azouz will provide specific aftercare instructions that should be followed closely for optimal healing.   Dr. Azouz utilizes multiple techniques that minimize pain with a Tummy Tuck. This includes the method of anesthesia, local nerve blocks, no drain approach, cold therapy, and more.  Swelling and bruising is normal but should subside within weeks after surgery. Dr. Azouz has patients avoid steam rooms and saunas for three months after surgery so as to swell. Most people are free to return to their normal routine within one to two weeks.   Heavy activity such as scuba diving, horseback riding, basketball, hockey, as well as heavy lifting is out for six weeks.

Can a Tummy Tuck Be Combined with Other Procedures?

The Tummy Tuck is often combined with other surgeries for a more comprehensive approach to addressing patient concerns. Dr. Azouz routinely uses liposuction with a Tummy Tuck to remove fatty tissue in and around the abdomen. Also, a Tummy Tuck is one of the main procedures done in a mommy makeover. A mommy makeover is a comprehensive surgery that uses procedures that address the abdomen, breasts, and fatty tissue on the body.  Patients will often have a breast lift, breast augmentation or labiaplasty concurrently with their Tummy Tuck.

Do I need to lose weight before a Tummy Tuck?

Often Dr. Azouz does not necessarily recommend losing weight prior to a Tummy Tuck.  A Tummy Tuck can be a great way to improve exercise and diet. Dr. Azouz does recommend quitting smoking prior to a Tummy Tuck.

Does Dr. Azouz perform liposuction with a Tummy Tuck?

Dr. Azouz routinely performs liposuction in multiple locations during a Tummy Tuck.  Liposuction helps to sculpt the body and provide an improved figure. Dr. Azouz also performs liposuction of the lateral chest wall to remove “bra fat” with a mommy makeover.

Can my belly button be saved with a Tummy Tuck?

Dr. Azouz is able to create a more aesthetic umbilicus (belly button) during a Tummy Tuck.  Dr. Azouz saves the belly button skin and “moves” the belly button to a more aesthetic location with better position.  Dr. Azouz has been able to save many belly buttons that other surgeons had deemed not salvageable.

Does Dr. Azouz perform a drain-less Tummy Tuck?

Yes! Dr. Azouz routinely performs a drain-less Tummy Tuck and has been doing so for over 25 years.  Most patients in his practice undergo a drain-less operation.

Can my Gallbladder or Uterus be removed at the same time as a Tummy Tuck?

Yes. Dr. Azouz is able to coordinate with OBGYN (gynecologists) and general surgeons to perform intrabdominal surgery concurrently with various cosmetic plastic surgery operations.  This includes liposuction, breast augmentation, breast lift, Tummy Tuck and monsplasty at the same time as another surgery. This allows for one anesthetic and one recovery.

Is a Tummy Tuck painful?

Dr. Azouz performs a variety of techniques to minimize pain with a Tummy Tuck.  These include local and regional nerve blocks, compression, cold therapy and more.  Many patients report minimal pain with their tummy tuck.

Do the results of a Tummy Tuck last?

The results of a Tummy Tuck do last.  This is especially true if a patient remains at approximately the same weight.  Many patients have gained significant weight after a Tummy Tuck but still report that they have a flat abdomen which was better than before.

What if I get pregnant after a Tummy Tuck?

Patients can still get pregnant after a Tummy Tuck.  Dr. Azouz recommends that patients not plan a Tummy Tuck if they think they are getting pregnant within a year of surgery.  Dr. Azouz has seen skin retraction in patients who have gotten pregnant years after their Tummy Tuck. These patients still reverted to their post-Tummy Tuck bodies.

Does a Tummy Tuck remove stretch marks?

Yes, a Tummy Tuck removes stretch marks within the skin excision of a Tummy Tuck.  A Tummy Tuck is an excellent way to remove stretch marks from the lower abdomen.

Where are the scars located in a Tummy Tuck?

A Tummy Tuck usually involves a scar hidden within the underwear line and a scar around the belly button.  The belly button is a scar from the loss of the umbilical cord at birth. This means that belly button scars are usually camouflaged once they fade.

When will I see the results of a Tummy Tuck?

Tummy tuck results will be seen once the bruising and swelling subsides.  Patients usually see significant improvement in their abdomen within six weeks after surgery.  Patients report that their abdomen will continue to look better over time. Some patients report maximal improvement within one year after surgery while others sometimes report that they look even better at 18 months after surgery.

What should I eat after my Tummy Tuck?

Dr. Azouz will review nutrition with his patients after surgery.  There are a variety of wound healing products available to improve healing after surgery.  Silicone gel and silicone gel sheeting can be helpful to help scars fade faster. Some patients report that dietary supplements can also speed up wound healing.

What is the best age for a Tummy Tuck?

Dr. Azouz performs Tummy Tucks in patients of varied ages.  In general the younger the better. Some patients who are healthy can have Tummy Tucks into their sixties.  Dr. Azouz has also performed Tummy Tucks in patients who are in their 20s and this usually involves post-bariatric patients.  Generally, patients will undergo Tummy Tucks in their 30s to 50s.

Dr. Azouz routinely sends patients home the same day as they have their surgery.  Through history and physical examination, Dr. Azouz will determine if you are a candidate for a same day Tummy Tuck.  Dr. Azouz utilizes many techniques to permit the recovery process to be as comfortable as possible.  Dr. Azouz strives to afford patients the best tummy tuck by using additional methods of minimizing pain, nausea, and discomfort.

Can my hernia be repaired with a Tummy Tuck?

Many patients elect to have their hernia repaired through a tummy tuck incision.  In many cases, Dr. Azouz is able to repair both a rectus diastasis and even large hernias without the use of mesh.

What is the Cost of a Tummy Tuck?

The cost of a Tummy Tuck surgery is dependent on many factors. Each patient gets a different surgery depending on their specific needs, so each cost if different. Dr. Azouz provides each patient with an individual cost, this will be discussed during the consultation appointment.
