Aesthetic breast augmentation, or mammaplasty, is a surgical procedure to increase the size of the breasts. It is typically performed to enlarge small, underdeveloped breasts or breasts that have decreased in size, or atrophied, after childbearing. It may also be done to balance asymmetry that may result from post mastectomy reconstruction. The extent of the procedure depends on what changes are desired and what Dr. Azouz deems appropriate.
On Dr. Azouz's recommendation you may be operated on in an outpatient sugical facility, or you may be admitted to a hospital. Augmentation mammaplasty usually is performed under a local anesthetic with sedation which numbs the area around the breasts. Medication to relieve tension is given before the anesthetic is administered. The sedative and local anesthetic allow you to be comfortable during surgery.
Reconstructive mammaplasty is performed to recreate a breast that has been removed during mastectomy. The extent of the breast reconstruction procedure depends on what changes are desired and what you and your surgeon deem appropriate. The operation usually is performed in a hospital under local anesthesia which will make you sleep through the entire procedure. There are various surgical approaches to breast reconstruction. The technique employed will differ according to the type of mastectomy performed and the condition of the breast skin.
When the remaining breast skin is loose and of adequate thickness, reconstruction may be accomplished solely by means of a surgical implant or prosthesis.
Reduction mammaplasty typically is performed to reduce disproportionately large, sagging breasts. It also can reduce the size of the areola (the dark pink skin surrounding the nipple) which frequently becomes enlarged as the breast develops. The extent of the procedure depends on what changes are desired and what your surgeon deems appropriate.
Although you may be operated on in an outpatient surgical facility, reduction mammaplasty is generally performed in a hospital.
Mastopexy typically is performed to lift sagging, loose breasts or breasts that have lost volume and elasticity after childbearing. It also can reduce the size of the areola, the dark pink skin surrounding the nipple. The extent of the procedure depends on what changes are desired and what Dr. Azouz deems appropriate. You may be operated on in an outpatient surgical facility or you may be admitted to a hospital. Mastopexy usually is performed under local anesthesia.
