A bulge near your armpit or bra line may be armpit fat, axillary breast tissue, or a mix of both. Because they can look similar, an evaluation can help determine what’s creating the fullness and whether axillary breast tissue removal or underarm liposuction fits your goals.

How Can You Tell Armpit Fat From Axillary Breast Tissue?

Accessory breast tissue is breast tissue located outside the usual breast area, most often in the axilla. UCLA Health notes that it can respond to hormonal changes, so tenderness or swelling may become more noticeable during pregnancy, lactation, or around your menstrual cycle.

Underarm fullness can also come from ordinary fatty tissue or another type of lump. If the area is new, changing, painful, or feels like a distinct mass, have a doctor evaluate it before assuming it’s a cosmetic contour issue. An exam and, when appropriate, imaging can help clarify what’s there.

When Might Axillary Breast Tissue Removal Make Sense?

You may want to discuss axillary breast tissue removal when persistent fullness causes physical discomfort or keeps bothering you in clothing. Common reasons to request an evaluation include:

  • chafing or irritation from bras and clothing
  • tenderness or swelling in the underarm
  • discomfort with arm movement
  • a prominent underarm contour you want to change

A consultation doesn’t automatically mean surgery. Tissue type, skin laxity, symptoms, and your priorities all affect the recommendation.

Will Liposuction or Excision Work Better?

At Azouz Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery, axillary breast tissue removal may involve liposuction, direct excision, or both. Primarily fatty tissue with mild skin laxity may be suitable for underarm liposuction, while glandular tissue or loose skin may require excision.

A peer-reviewed review of axillary breast tissue treatment options found that treatment planning depends on tissue type, the amount of excess tissue, and skin laxity. The trade-offs are different, too. Excision requires an incision and leaves a scar, while liposuction alone may not adequately address glandular tissue or significant loose skin.

What Will a Dallas Plastic Surgeon Evaluate?

We focus on whether the fullness is primarily fat, glandular tissue, loose skin, or a combination. If the area looks more like a new or changing lump than a stable contour concern, further medical evaluation may come before cosmetic treatment.

Dr. Solomon Azouz is a board-certified Dallas plastic surgeon who completed plastic and reconstructive surgery training at Mayo Clinic. If you’re considering axillary breast tissue removal in Dallas, we can explain whether liposuction, excision, a combined approach, or no surgery makes sense for your anatomy.

Axillary Breast Tissue Removal FAQs

Is axillary breast tissue the same as armpit fat?

No. Axillary breast tissue contains breast tissue, while armpit fat is adipose tissue. They can look similar, and you may have a combination of both, so an evaluation is useful before choosing treatment.

Can axillary breast tissue removal be combined with another breast procedure?

Yes, for some patients. Azouz Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery may combine removal with a breast reduction, breast lift, or breast augmentation when the combination fits your goals and surgical plan.
