Aesthetic breast augmentation, or augmentation mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure to increase the size of the breasts. It is typically performed to enlarge small, underdeveloped breasts or breasts that have decreased in size, or atrophied after childbearing. It may also be done to balance asymmetry that some patients have since puberty. The extent of the procedure depends on what changes are desired and what Dr. Azouz deems appropriate. Augmentation mammaplasty usually is performed under a local anesthetic with sedation which numbs the area around the breasts. Medication to relieve tension is given before the anesthetic is administered. The sedative and local anesthetic allows you to be comfortable during surgery. Patients go home shortly after the procedure is performed, and most patients return to work within a few days of undergoing the procedure.
Reduction mammaplasty typically is performed to reduce disproportionately large, sagging breasts. It also can reduce the size of the areola (the dark pink skin surrounding the nipple) which frequently becomes enlarged as the breast develops. Dr. Azouz will help you decide the size of your new breasts. Breast reduction surgery is performed as a day surgery. Most patients return to work within a week of undergoing the surgery. There are many new techniques for breast reduction which achieve smaller, perkier breasts, with fewer and shorter scars.
Breast Lift (Mastopexy)
Mastopexy is often performed to lift sagging, loose breasts, or breasts that have lost volume and elasticity after childbearing. It also can reduce the size of the areola, the dark pink skin surrounding the nipple. The extent of the procedure depends on what changes you and Dr. Azouz deem appropriate. Mastopexy is performed under local anesthesia with sedation, and the patient returns home on the same day as the surgery. The recovery following breast lift is usually quick and relatively easy.
Correction of Breast Assymetry
Both men and women often have assymetries of the breast. These can be present from birth and from puberty. There are many different ways to equalize the breasts. Some include augmenting the smaller side to match the larger side. Others, might include making the larger size smaller to match the smaller breast. Dr. Azouz will help you decide which of the many procedures will be best for you. Surgeries of this kind are performed on a outpatient basis. Patients usually recover enough to return to work within a few days of the procedure.
Post – Breast Mastectomy
Reconstructive mammaplasty is performed to recreate a breast that has been removed during mastectomy. The extent of the breast reconstruction procedure depends on what changes you and Dr. Azouz deem appropriate. The operation is performed on an outpatient basis, and under local anesthesia which will make you sleep through the entire procedure. There are various surgical approaches to breast reconstruction. The technique employed will differ according to the type of mastectomy performed and the condition of the breast skin. When the remaining breast skin is loose and of adequate thickness, reconstruction may be accomplished solely by means of a surgical implant or prosthesis.
